Where do you enable the display?
| Edition | Route | What to watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Java | Press F3 in-game and find XYZ | Debug layout can change between versions |
| Bedrock | Pause → Settings → Game → World Options → Show Coordinates | It is a world setting; server management permissions can matter |
Java 26.3 allows debug text to use a separate interface scale. If it is hard to read, open Debug Options with F3 + F6. Look for the information label rather than expecting a line to remain at the position shown in an old screenshot.

What does each number measure?
| Axis | Position it describes | Increasing values move toward |
|---|---|---|
| X | East–west | East |
| Y | Height | Up |
| Z | North–south | South |
A negative sign is part of the location. X -120 is a different place from X 120. Read the signs when sharing a position, and make sure everyone is in the same world and dimension before comparing numbers.

How do you work out the direction home?
Take an illustrative home position of X 120, Y 70, Z -40. From X 150, Y 65, Z -20, the target is 30 lower on X, 20 lower on Z and five higher on Y. Those differences describe the destination; they are not instructions to walk straight through the terrain or dig a tunnel.
Use X and Z differences to keep track of horizontal progress while choosing a safe route. Then look for the entrance at the correct height. Being above a cave home does not put you at its door; Y explains why the horizontal numbers can match while the entrance remains out of sight.
Which places are worth recording?
- Home: add a short description such as the entrance facing the river.
- The start of an expedition: include the dimension and a recognizable point on the return route.
- A meeting place: confirm that friends are on the same world or server, then choose an accessible surface location.
The numbers here are a worked example, not a seed or guaranteed structure location. Use a map for the shape of the surroundings and coordinates for a specific destination. Keep checking the actual terrain for cliffs, lava and other obstacles as you move.
