What can you finish before sunset?
| Available supplies | Do this now | Leave this for later |
|---|---|---|
| Dirt or stone blocks | Make a small shelter with a closable entrance | A large decorated house |
| Planks, sticks and coal | Craft torches and light the shelter | A distant cave expedition |
| Bed materials | Put a normal bed inside your shelter | Searching exposed terrain for sheep |
| Little food and weak equipment | Stay close to your starting area | A long trip or optional fight |
The shelter’s job is to keep mobs from reaching you. If you cannot make a door yet, close the opening with blocks. A dark natural cave is not automatically safe just because it has a roof; you need to control the space you occupy.

How do you prepare light?
- Gather wood and turn it into planks in your inventory. A crafting table uses four planks.
- Craft sticks from planks, collect coal with a pickaxe, then use the recipe book to check the torch materials.
- Light the shelter and its entrance. A torch beside you is not a guarantee that the entire surrounding landscape is safe.
If coal is still missing, finish the shelter first. Put a solid boundary between yourself and the outside, then collect the next supplies in daylight. Following an unfamiliar tunnel after sunset adds another problem when you are still learning how to move and craft.

Does a Straw Bed replace your regular bed?
A normal bed needs three wool and three planks and can set your respawn point. Java 26.3 introduced a different item: the Straw Bed skips the night without changing that point, then disappears after use. Keep the two jobs separate when planning where you will return after dying.

What should you check at sunrise?
Look outside before leaving cover. Not every hostile mob disappears in daylight. Record the shelter’s location and take blocks and food before collecting anything farther away.
Choose one next task: basic tools and a crafting table, for example, if your temporary home is already usable. A large build and a long exploration trip compete for the same early supplies. A smaller plan makes it easier to return with the materials you meant to gather.
