From a tree to your first table
- Break a nearby wood block and collect the dropped item. An item lying on the ground is not yet a material in your inventory.
- Open the inventory, put wood in the crafting area and take the resulting planks. One wood block provides four planks for this starting recipe.
- Fill the four crafting slots with planks, or select the table in the recipe book. Take the output and place the table in the world.
- Interact with that placed table. Carrying a table in your inventory does not open its crafting interface.
Which crafting screen should you use?
| What you are doing | Where to look | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Preparing a simple material | Small inventory crafting area | Wood-to-planks preparation can start here |
| Following a larger recipe layout | A crafting table placed in the world | The table provides a larger working grid |
| Processing something in a furnace | The station required by the recipe | Not every item is a crafting-table output |
The recipe book marks missing ingredients. Search for the item, select it and check the required material type. A block with a similar colour is not automatically a substitute for the one the recipe asks for.

Why is the recipe missing or not producing anything?
Check search and filtering first. A view limited to craftable items can hide a recipe for which you lack ingredients. The “Show Craftable” control in the example distinguishes that view; its position varies with edition and input method.
Next, put the ingredients in your inventory. Nearby storage and items you are carrying are different places. When the result appears, take it to finish the operation; merely selecting the recipe preview is not the same as collecting the crafted item.
What is a useful first crafting goal?
Choose the immediate job. Near sunset, light and shelter preparation are more useful than browsing every possible recipe. If you need stone, work backwards from a pickaxe. Looking up one target and then its ingredients is easier than trying to memorize the whole book.
For a torch, inspect the need for sticks and coal. Gathering coal with a pickaxe and producing sticks are separate steps. Identify which step is incomplete and continue there instead of repeatedly moving unrelated items around the grid.
