What does the Minecraft Deep Ocean error mean?

The code shows on Windows and Mac, on the Launcher screen before the game even opens. Mojang's Deep Ocean article splits the fix by device: PC has a repair tool, Mac doesn't.

Short answer

Deep Ocean shows when the Minecraft Launcher sign-in fails. Sign out and restart the PC first; on PC run the Gaming Services Repair Tool from the Xbox app, and on Mac open a support ticket if the general steps fail.

General steps first

Try these first. Mojang's general steps, in order: sign out and restart the device, close non-Minecraft programs, check your internet, disable Add-Ons, free up storage, and make sure you're on the same version as your friend. On Windows you can also run the Xbox Gaming Services Repair Tool. If nothing works, back up your worlds and reinstall.

How to fix Deep Ocean on PC

On Windows the fix is the Gaming Services Repair Tool. You run it from the Xbox app:

  1. Download and install the Xbox PC app from the Xbox website; if it's installed, it just opens.
  2. Sign in to your Microsoft account if asked.
  3. Click your profile picture in the top-left and choose Support.
  4. Choose Gaming Services Repair Tool and press Start Troubleshooting.

If the tool won't open from the Xbox app, run the Downloadable version from the Gaming Services Repair Tool for PC page on Xbox support.

Deep Ocean on Mac

Mac has no Gaming Services tool. If the general steps don't work, Mojang's advice is to open a support ticket straight away. Add the information from the error screen and the steps you tried.

FAQ

Is Deep Ocean the same as 0x803F8001?
No. Deep Ocean means the Launcher sign-in failed; 0x803F8001 means the license wasn't found on the signed-in account. Checking that your accounts match helps with both.
